Olton Investigations
Professional Structural Investigations

We are a family run company offering surveys based on predetermined critical locations, alongside bespoke structural investigations.
Our experience in structural engineering and surveying spans over 20 years, of which the last 15 years have been spent both as an Investigation Engineer for a leading investigation company followed by setting up and running Olton Investigations.
We provide services to help Clients better understand how their buildings are constructed by confirming if existing drawings are correct, or when drawings are not provided when building handovers occur.
Our aim is to utilise our vast experience in Structural Investigations by offering our Clients a streamlined, no nonsense approach to determine a range of potential structural issues, whether this is routine sampling and inspections, change of use loadings, or more detailed analysis of a structural frame.
Our Services
Post-Tension Inspections
Locating and exposing post-tensioned ducts for inspection purposes. Impulse radar/GPR will be deployed to locate any ducts for exposing the sheath/duct. Careful inspection and sizing of grouted tendons and anchorage with samples of grout collected for deleterious materials.
Pre-Stressed Elements
Plotting of reinforcement and sizing of pre-stressed concrete elements. Micro-Converter and impulse radar/GPR surveys to map pre-stressed wires and exposures to size and condition.
Reinforced Concrete Frame Structures
Mapping of reinforced concrete elements for capacity and condition purposes via intrusive openings, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) and Microcovermeter surveys. Concrete samples can be collected to determine compressive strength and presence of deleterious materials.
Steel Frame Superstructures
Locating and exposing different steel elements for sizing, condition and setting out, including node connections. In-situ hardness, spark testing and samples collected for further analysis.
Case Studies
Our Previous Projects
Chesterfield Memorial Hall
Scanned via GPR all accessible walls, peirs and stone lintels to inform the Client if a steel frame was present or not.
Hereford Museum and Art Gallery
Suite of masonry sampling for compression testing and mortar sampling for mix constituents.
Maytrees Cottage, Essex
Determined the position of the timber frame behind the masonry cladding using GPR, then a suite of remedial ties designed.
St Oswalds Church, Malpas
Requested a GPR survey to determine if any voids or burials were present behind the wall to inform the remedial works.
